ABSTRACT

World food security is under threat because of the rapid growth of food demand and the deterioration of natural resources, which is increasingly unpredictable due to climate change. Inadequate food security and nutrition are likely to have negative consequences for the livelihoods and economic capabilities of vulnerable populations. Sustainability can be considered a precondition for long-term food and nutrition security. This chapter presents a literature review which is conducted to identify the different dimensions of the interaction between sustainability, food security/insecurity, and agricultural and food production. It discusses the concepts of sustainability and food security and addresses the relationship between these concepts considering agricultural production and the impacts of climate change. Conservation of life below water is one target for sustainable development. Fisheries and aquaculture offer opportunities to reduce hunger and improve nutrition, alleviate poverty, and generate economic growth along the seashore where the major proportion of the world population lives.
