ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author describes hear from four major members of the documentary filmmaking community: a funder, distributor, and film festival and television network. Fork Films is a production company and film funder; they funded 16 films in 2017 with generous awards in the range of US$10K to US$50K. Think of this as a relationship with a funder that filmmakers hope to build for the future. It's not always easy as a first-time filmmaker to get a meeting with distributors. Women Make Movies is a fantastic non-profit organization that supports filmmakers not only as a distributor but a fiscal sponsor. Many of filmmakers will know Thom's name from the Toronto International Film Festival where he programs the documentary films and his Pure NonFic-tion podcast. American Documentary is the non-profit media art organization that programs point of view (POV). Since 1988 POV has presented over 400 films to public television audiences across the country.
