Foundation funding can come in the form of donations, or through the awarding of grants. Filmmakers will probably be looking to fundraise after they shot a few scenes, so that filmmakers can make a trailer for their grant applications and pitching purposes or even crowdfunding to help raise money. One filmmaker felt that developing filmmakers' project for funding prepares filmmakers well to fight for their distribution pitches later in filmmakers' filmmaking journey. Crowdfunding is an amazing way to start filmmakers' outreach for the film. We contacted 130 relevant organizations about our campaign, from "green" non-profit groups, guitar blogs, enviro news blogs, outdoor magazines, to Native American museums and more. Pre-sales are rare for docs. When filmmakers' thinking of their budget it's good to remember that Submarine, a very successful sales agent advises that US$500–600K might be all can get from US rights filmmakers to the film.
