ABSTRACT

In the solution of chemical engineering problems, it is often required to establish generalizations for estimating physical properties of mixtures using only limited available experimental information. In particular, the estimation of thermodynamic properties of vapors and liquids plays a very important role in chemical engineering computations. In this chapter, physical property data and correlations for typical liquids and gases are introduced and reviewed. The correlations described in this chapter are limited to those that the author has deemed to have the greatest value in common practical application. The main objective of this chapter is to provide readers with various estimation procedures, correlations, and MATLAB® programs for a limited set of properties of typical chemical compounds. MATLAB programs presented in this chapter can be used to analyze properties for a range of variables and correlation constants, and the readers can customize these programs for their own purposes. The topics covered in this chapter include water and steam, humidity, density of saturated liquids, heat capacity, vapor pressure, enthalpy of vaporization, heat of formation of ideal gases, Gibbs free energy, and diffusion coefficients.
