ABSTRACT

While attempts to increase LGBTIQ inclusion in sport have increased, they often focus on how to fit us into the current heteronormative sport system. Letting us in without changing the culture of sport allows prejudice to linger. Rather, we need to reimagine or queer sport by radically transforming it through overt challenges to heteronormativity. Compassionately inclusive sport will prioritize inclusion of everyone and define fairness as empowerment of the most vulnerable. We explore avenues to reconsider the nearly universal practice of organizing sport based on binary sex division and offer strategies to lay the groundwork for genuine LGBTIQ inclusion.
