ABSTRACT

This chapter lays out the overarching focus of the book: a critique of sport for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ) sportspeople. It is conceptually framed in cultural studies approaches and intersectional analyses applied to theory, research, and praxis for LGBTIQ people in sport. In the introduction, I point out paradoxes in sport resulting in both inclusion and exclusion of sex, gender, and sexually diverse sportspeople. Using an intersectional lens reveals differential treatment of LGBTIQ sportspeople. In particular, sport is least hospitable toward LGBTIQ athletes of color, those perceived as gender and sex nonconforming, and those in leadership positions.
