Chapter 3 seeks to explain what steps led to the March on Rome by examining the evolution of subversive Fascist practices and strategies to oppose and overcome the liberal institutions. In particular, this analysis shows how the discourse on a possible Fascist coup developed through the post-war period, especially in the last months before the conquest of power. The chapter then explores the actual planning of the March on Rome and the seizing of the liberal State. Finally, it reflects on the relationship existing between subversion and the defence of the State both in the rhetoric and in the politics of Fascists and of the State, showing the ambiguous relationship existing between the army and the Fascist Party.
