ABSTRACT

Cress is a general name for plants eaten as a sharp-tasting salad, garnish or potherb. Upland cress, locally known as American cress, dry land cress, cassabully and creasy salad, is one of three major cresses. The rest two are garden cress and watercress. It contains lots of lutein, which is important for preventing macular degeneration. Upland cress, being a member of the brassica family, has the ability to fight cancer and other diseases. Upland cress, being a cool season crop, grows best in cool and moist climates with an average temperature range of 16°C to 25°C. The nutritional requirement of upland cress depends on variety, soil type, soil fertility, growing conditions and crop grown in previous season. Upland cress, being a leafy vegetable crop, needs more nitrogen as compared to other vegetable crops, as insufficiency of nitrogen in soil results in poor growth and yellowing of leaves.
