ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates how cyber and other electronic technologies are now in the service of criminals whose activities require investigators with advanced cyber skills. The current online era has changed everything around humans. The Internet gives people knowledge, information, communication, economic development, well-being and so much more. It can also give them pain through criminal acts. A typical cybercrime is ransomware, where a virus installs itself in a victim's computer. It locks all functions, displaying a message on the screen demanding ransom in exchange for unlocking the computer. Usually, hackers would "attack" one's computer without inflicting any damage or leaving any trace. Their motive can be pleasure or curiosity, without seeking any economic benefit. The basic principle of Internet fraud is to persuade the victim that by paying a small amount now, a much larger amount is awaiting. Web scams are increasing exponentially, with the fraudsters' sophistication equally increasing.
