ABSTRACT

This chapter describes two fields, the main threads of development work, and their impact on accessible public transportation. It identifies challenges that need to be addressed to make further advances in practice and avenues for future research and product development. Social computing is a large research area that investigates both how the ever-increasing number of computational systems and communication technologies have influenced people's behavior and how new technical communication systems can be designed to engender specific behaviors. Recently, this research community has become interested in how people and computing systems can be combined to form socio-technical systems that can do things neither computers or people can do independently. Service design emerged as a distinct design discipline in reaction to the transition in many post-industrial countries from manufacturing and selling products to delivering services. The service design community has noted that public services are a special case for service innovation.
