ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes representations of women in two popular otome game titles by Otomate: Code: Realize—The Guardian of Rebirth, and Princess Arthur. The unnecessary loss in times of war is one of the major themes of Princess Arthur. Princess Arthur and Code: Realize contain fictional worlds that allow the insertion of women into narratives mostly dominated by men, but this positioning of women is mostly because of their ability to love. Otome games or maiden games are a category of games that originated in Japan that is produced and marketed specifically to women. Understanding moe and how it structures game worlds and gameplay can provide the context wherein otome gameplay exists, and the ways in which otome gameplay can be potentially subversive. The most interesting thing in the writing of Cardia as a heroine is an attempt to make a mostly self-rescuing otome game heroine.
