ABSTRACT

The contributions of working as safety professionals can be highly rewarding. Serious injuries, catastrophic incidents, environmental harm, major property damage, and significant business loss can be prevented, contributing to overall business excellence and sustainability. To work at many facilities today, use of process safety systems designed to manage hazardous materials and processes is fundamental to being able to get any work done at all. Personnel in management, design, engineering, maintenance, operations, contractor services, and various support functions must know at least some process safety system requirements to be able to complete their work correctly and safely. To develop technical competence and capability, the process safety professional must learn, understand, and apply basic process safety information and obtain a variety of technical and operational experiences. Without a learning plan, development of expert knowledge and capability in process safety may be constrained by lack of management agreement or funding.
