ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the international regulation that has been developed at the global and regional levels for the purpose of the prevention, control and reduction of marine pollution and climate change. It highlights the challenges in regulating marine pollution and climate change. The chapter introduces the regulatory initiatives of the international community in combating marine pollution and climate change respectively. Some new forms of marine pollution are emerging with the rapid growth of international seaborne trade. Anthropogenic sources of noise in the marine environment, including those from commercial shipping, oil and gas exploration, dredging and fishing, can generate acoustic pollution that can travel considerable distances. In the context of marine environment, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions has gradually led to the rise of ocean temperature and altered the dynamics of the marine environment. The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) is International Maritime Organization's (IMO) senior technical body on marine pollution related matters.
