ABSTRACT

The analytical hierarchy process (AHP) is frequently used to solve various problems of environmentally conscious manufacturing and product recovery (ECMPRO) including the evaluation of recycling, remanufacturing, reverse logistics initiatives, and ranking of suppliers based on environmental factors. This chapter presents an AHP model to evaluate the relative importance of various environmental criteria and to assess the relative performance of several suppliers along these criteria. There have been many applications of AHP in the design for the environment. The environmental performance of alternative product designs was evaluated in Azzone and Noci using AHP. Choi and team presented a comparative analysis of five designs for environment strategies based on the results of an AHP analysis. The AHP-based green product design methodology prevented designers from conducting a detailed analysis (e.g., life cycle assessment) for every product design alternative. The recycling potential of materials is evaluated through an AHP analysis based on environmental and economic factors.
