ABSTRACT

The superfamily Empidoidea belongs to the suborder Brachycera of the order Diptera. It encompasses a large number of species in the family's Empididae, Dolichopodidae, Atelestidae, and Hybotidae. The habits of most species in the dipteran superfamily Empidoidea have not yet been carefully investigated in most parts of the world, but many observations suggest that the habit of giving wedding presents could be common to most or all European species in the superfamily. Whether giving "wedding presents" is a characteristic behavior of the family Empididae in all parts of the world must still be confirmed through research on other continents. Like other members of the superfamily Empidoidea, the family Empididae encompasses species that give wedding presents. It includes a large number of species, the adults of which are typically observed flying rapidly in swarms moving back and forth near the habitats in which their larvae develop.
