ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses businesses related mainly to the demonstration of insects. Within Europe, the Netherlands has the most businesses of this kind, with 18 companies producing insects. The volume of production varies from hundreds of kilograms per month to 2,000 kg per month. An example of an African company developing industrial-scale insect farming is AgriProtein, a company that aims to satisfy the growing demand for animal feed. The species used by the company is the common house fly. There is entomological equipment that is designed mainly for hobbyists and collectors; however, dealing with businesses related to providing collectors with insects, often species that are missing from their own collections. Insects were first raised for scientific purposes or for biological control of agricultural and forest pests. A variety of other kinds of business exist related to insects. Because insects are frequently used in scientific research, there is a constant demand for their production.
