ABSTRACT

Different species of insects are used in a variety of scientific studies. Owing to the diversity of insects, there is always a possibility to find one that will satisfy the necessary requirements of experiments in the most diverse academic fields. For more than 100 years, the most important subject of genetic research has been fruit flies. The insects also are of considerable importance for gerontological investigations. Naturally, mammals would be more appropriate to study the aging process in humans; however, their use is frequently inexpedient due to their long lifetimes and high maintenance costs. Soil insects are often studied to analyze the soil development. Forensic entomology is a science and type of practical activity related to the application of data on insects and other arthropods in forensic science, mainly for criminal trials. Beginning in the 1980s, forensic entomology began to use different modern biochemical and genetic methods.
