ABSTRACT

Hazard identification (HAZID) is a well-established method in health, safety, and environment (HSE) management. HAZID is the first step in a feedback control cycle, which also includes assessment of a risk and design and implementation of mitigating measures. Legislation in Europe and the United States make it a responsibility of the employer to ensure that the barriers against major accidents involving chemical hazards are inspected regularly. Inspections are regular activities aimed at maintaining vigilance through adequate control of hazards and deviations at the workplace. The type and timing of safety inspections needs to be risk-based. Management inspection is a tool aimed at demonstrating senior management's concern for safety and reinforcing the safety standard at workplaces. The chapter also focuses on safety audits. Audits are a management tool used to create confidence in the audit client that safety is taken care of adequately. The auditing of companies' occupational health and safety (OHS) management systems has been subject to evaluation research.
