ABSTRACT

The conference, which was wheelchair accessible, interpreted for the hearing impaired and provided child care, was something like a family reunion with all the familiarity and unavoidable tensions. Fried's perspective was partially contradicted the next morning by the presentation of a slide show prepared as an organizing tool for the Network by Pat Rush (Chicago Women Organized for Reproductive Choice) and Carol Travis (WORC and The Sojourner Truth Organization). Network is primarily white and heterosexual, a few groups led by women of color, like the Oakland coalition, have recently joined. Because of issues they have raised and because discussions of race are taking place nationally throughout the women's movement, the afternoon was reserved for a plenary on racism. Maria Rodriguez (Mexican-American Education and Legal Fund and the Chicano Legal Rights Project of Los Angeles) spoke of some of the realities in the lives of Chicanas that organizers must be aware of when dealing with issues like abortion.
