ABSTRACT

One of the most obvious reasons is that our biological families have abandoned us. Our parents are not protecting us. Our siblings are not supporting us. Our children are not defending us. The America that is against us is composed of and maintained by our families. The spiritual price is, for us, immeasurable. No other group of people has been so abandoned. As a result, we come to each other without true foundations of support. We come without permanence. Gay men who strove to be at one with other people before AIDS advocate for a broad agenda and a democratic process within their organizations. Men who were oriented exclusively towards power and money before AIDS treat the floor of ACT UP like the floor of the stock exchange. The challenge for AIDS activism and for the whole gay and lesbian movement today is to find an overt and effective manner for interrupting the modes of domination within our own movements.
