ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how certain types of system problems can be addressed. If one works in a system with too many frivolous behavior intervention plans (BIP) referrals, they may choose to consider kicking up the paperwork. More commonly, schools adopt one new behavior system as a list of interventions they can try. When those interventions do not work, and a BIP is requested, there can often be resistance to interventions which fall outside the school’s adopted program. The final step that every BIP should include is a method of data tracking. Every member of the team should be very clear as to what are the criteria for success and who will monitor them. Investing in experts allows for focused follow-up of a successful BIP without requiring personal intervention. BIPs should be presented in person prior to any team meeting, but never read to the recipients.
