ABSTRACT

A research study of high-school students found that when the popular students drink and approve of drinking, the average student at the school is more likely to drink. In the words of the American rock group Bowling for Soup, High School Never Ends. Adults in school systems tend to function very much like the students. People problems are too obvious and too unhelpful to be analyzed. It is easy to sit back and blame a person for an unsuccessful intervention, just as it is easy for teachers to blame parents or lack of medication for difficult students. High-school teachers tend to be more cynical than kindergarten teachers. Working in schools is tricky business and often what makes one's careers so frustrating is not the students, but the adults with whom they interact.
