ABSTRACT

Committed action is the behavioural component of valued living, where we turn our values from intentions and ideals into action. This is about more than just progressing towards prescribed goals on an action plan. It is about supporting clients in taking moment-by-moment action in service of their values, and in learning to be mindful and flexible in their behaviour. As they pursue their values, they will encounter uncomfortable internal experiences – these are opportunities to practice the core ACC processes. Ultimately we aim to support our clients in building larger and larger patterns of effective action. As such, we tend to focus on the process of taking action towards goals, rather than solely on the outcomes of those actions – we judge “success” more on whether a client took action in service of their values, rather than whether they got the result they were hoping for.
