ABSTRACT

In ACC we consciously use functional metaphors to evoke behavioural change by providing clients with new relational frames that facilitate different perspectives on their experience. The aim is to transfer the functions within the relational network in the metaphor (the “vehicle”) to the client’s relational network (the “target”). An ACC coach can create their own metaphors to suit individual clients or call on one of many “classic” ACC metaphors in the public domain. The three things to consider are: Is there a match between the functions described in the metaphor and the functional relationships of the issue the client is facing? Is the purpose of the metaphor clear? And does the metaphor link to the client’s own sphere of experience? The chapter ends with descriptions of some well-used ACC metaphors.
