ABSTRACT

When introducing defusion, a little psychoeducation can be helpful to illustrate how the human mind evolved to keep us safe from perceived threat – helpful in a time when there were routine threats to life and limb, less helpful in the modern world where some things that feel “threatening” may also be life-enriching. Speaking about “the mind” as a separate entity is helpful to create some distance between one’s thoughts and oneself. This chapter describes a number of metaphors and exercises intended to increase that distance even further, the intention being that in the space that opens up conscious choice can be made. When defusion occurs we can be guided less by thoughts and more by values.
