ABSTRACT

One of the roles of an ACC coach is helping clients to create values-based goals, or to link pre-existing goals to values – in the absence of such a link it is likely that goals, even if achieved, will fail to bring the client the fulfilment they desire. Another role is to help clients break down goals and create workable action plans – this chapter specifically argues against “dead person’s goals” and for SMART goals. Another role is helping clients to use setback to reinforce psychological flexibility. Setbacks are great opportunities to practice defusion, acceptance, willingness and contact with the present moment, to continue to build the skill of psychological flexibility and act on what matters even in the presence of unwanted internal experiences. Discomfort is not a sign that something wrong – it is a call to persist.
