ABSTRACT

Some high-performing clients may present as reluctant to try new things. When that is the case a helpful way to frame ACC is as a new set of skills – something to sit alongside and complement the client’s existing way of operating, rather than to replace it. With clients whose pursuit of success has come at a cost to their health, self-care, general well-being or personal lives, work may be done on refocusing them on the process of valued living rather than solely the achievement of goals. Fred Kofman refers to “success beyond success” – success as measured by the degree to which one is true to and consistent in acting on one’s values as we strive towards our goals. It may be necessary to help clients detach from some self-stories that have driven them to unsustainable ways of working in the past. Similarly, it may be helpful to help them develop their Observing Self perspective so that they can develop their conscious awareness of their current habits.
