ABSTRACT

Coaching sessions rarely go exactly to plan. A real skill is being able to deal with “curveballs” or unexpected moves from clients skilfully and effectively, responding to the needs of the client, while staying consistent with the ACC model. This chapter addresses common difficulties that arise in coaching sessions, with practical tips and ideas for how to respond. This includes working with clients who clearly do not want to be in the sessions, working with clients who can’t identify emotions, and effectively managing clients who are obstructive or defensive.
