ABSTRACT

Acceptance is an active and ongoing, unfolding stance towards thoughts and feelings that promotes a reduction in unnecessary struggle. Rather than being passive, or resigning, it suggests an open stance towards thoughts, feelings, sensations and memories that facilitates movement towards chosen values. In ACC terms, acceptance is much less about the emotional qualities and much more about the behavioural actions. The term willingness is often substituted because it’s a word that captures that active stance towards internal content. This chapter explores the theory behind acceptance and it’s applicability to ACC.
