ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines the discourses of increased government control and patriarchy enabled a War Separation Allowance to be given to all wives of soldiers and sailors recruited into the army or navy. It presents in chronological order by when each discourse was identified in the journal. The book explores the discourse of police pensions that saw much national debate and many changes to enable police wives and children to receive a pension on the death of their breadwinner. It shows that the police involved in controversy in efforts trying to recruit soldiers and checking certificates. The book illustrates continuing discourse of serving King and Country which saw increasing hostility between policemen and special constables and between each other. It outlines police involvement in the discourse of youth crime, which was said to rise from the beginning of 1916 and alarmed the nation.
