ABSTRACT

This chapter considers of the theory of political opportunity structure and the need to identify the emergence of a new analytical yet neglected factor, that is the creation of a domestic–foreign alliance. It provides the development of the self-determination (VV) movement in Kosovo, while the third one explores the Levica movement in Macedonia. The chapter presents a joint analysis of the organizations’ political marginalization and their response to the domestic–foreign alliance resulting in their transformation into movement-parties. The movement mainly unites people fighting against authoritarian forms of ruling, and their forms of exploitation, but also against nationalism, militarism and clerisy. The chapter discusses the political structure of opportunities with the transformation of VV into a right-wing movement-party, and Levica into a left-wing one, by tracing: the opening access for participation of foreign actors; and the formation of the power relationship between the local government and the international institutions.
