ABSTRACT

The middle area is really the toughest to crack. Breaking through into the big leagues becomes very difficult because need credits and need a film that will give some exposure. Moving from the middle into the inner circles is no easier than breaking into the business originally. There is hardly any tougher task in this business than building a string of film credits and acquiring a set of alliances with filmmakers. There is considerable inequality in the distributions of status, income, and power. Each step toward the center of Big Hollywood dramatically narrows the field. Mobility depends on recognition. Even if the recognition is based on inaccurate labeling, a lamentably common tendency of filmmakers, it is essential in order to broaden one's base and boost the probabilities for future ties. Resources and price have a great deal to do with the matching between the filmmaker seeking a composer and the composer seeking a project.
