ABSTRACT

Lorissa Clarke was born in St. Joseph in 1912, the eldest of eight children. Her mother was a maid, her father a driver. She looked after her siblings as a child and as a result did not go to school. She brought up eight children, five of her own and three stepchildren, six of whom have migrated, five to the United States, and one to Britain. There was this gentleman. He was a watchman. The first wife did dead and left three boys. That time they used to got a little pond grass gang. When the big people pick the pond grass, one will carry it out that it will not grow back in the land. Eva was born in 1934, the first of Lorissa's children. She left Barbados in 1956 to join her boyfriend, Tony, in England, leaving their eldest daughter with Lorissa.
