ABSTRACT

Towards morning, the self-propelled ferrycraft arrive at the compound. An excavator pounds away with its big shovel on the crumbling west ramp, and the way to the canal is open. Another excavator scoops out the earth embankment, and a lighter slips into the water as the first tank impatiently races forward. The lighter engine begins to beat, and it ploughs across to the west bank–to Africa. This is a great moment. The paratroops on the other side are no longer alone. Tanks provide them with a cloak of armor. More lighters arrive, with additional tanks. This isn’t the rapid transit of a bridge, but the thin stream persists.
