ABSTRACT

Soviet military intervention in the Middle East today takes on a more tangible and threatening aspect. For the first time, the heads of the Soviet military mission to Egypt are sending panic news to the Kremlin. The cease-fire, resolved on by the Security Council following Soviet pressure on Washington, isn’t being kept. The last day has resulted in a serious change on the front. In 24 hours, the Israeli Army has achieved what it couldn’t during the whole war. The Third Army is encircled, and its rear echelon has been smashed and dispersed. There are only a few tanks between the Israeli columns and Cairo. The IDF has a number of possible alternatives, one of which is towards the Egyptian capital. There is nothing to stop them since the Second Army is in the north, far from the main roads to Cairo.
