The eve of the Day of Atonement. The General Staff today decides that intelligence evaluations are one thing, and precautionary measures are something completely different. Though the assessment is still that there will be no war, the Chief of Staff declares an alert in the standing army; a C Alert – among the highest states of preparedness. Certain steps have already been taken on the Golan Heights, but the alert now covers the entire Israel Defence Forces.
