ABSTRACT

Three broad domains of communicative competence are worthy of careful consideration. One, optimal human relations are predicated on performative measures of shared competence. Two, optimal human relations are assessed against pragmatic standards of communicative competence derived from applied measures of resource, ability, and skill. Three, prosocial measures of interpersonal compatibility are predicated on vital environmental conditions that support the reproduction of favorable outcomes and (re)integration of secondary benefits. Some normative conceptions of communicative competence are based on presumptions of civility, politeness, and good manners. Effective and appropriate exchanges prevail. Communication systems remain open, fluid, malleable, open, expressive, and responsive at the same time. Authentic communication is a significant achievement and a cumulative fulfillment of the wider potential for living beings to share open access to an inexhaustible universe of unfinished possibilities.
