ABSTRACT

George L. Mosse was one of the most influential historians of his generation; the contributions in this volume written by colleagues and students who belong to the leaders in their profession provide ample evidence. There are other intriguing phenomena that would have been of great interest to George Mosse, a student of the history of sexuality. This refers to the awards waiting for the fallen warrior, for paradise as the Hadith says, is under the shade of the sword. The issue of the virgins has become, off late, a matter of dispute. The Koran and the Hadith are very explicit about this; the virgins are described as doe-eyed and full-breasted. The descriptions of the carnal awards of the martyrs have been an embarrassment to some of the contemporary exegists of the Koran and the Hadith.
