ABSTRACT

The casual observer might sense only a bit of untidiness, but those in the know were at once wary and aware of what was at general issue. Imagine time-lapse photography of that sitting room covering a period of five or so hours. People enter the suite, and react in a similar way. They pause, and then move toward that envelope—as toward some known object. Many people enter the suite in that half-day, but the envelope remains—not only in place, but unremarked although observed by all. The territory covered in talk related to the limits on a folk saying: Who pays the piper calls the tune. In organization development (OD), that saying has very sharp limits. Several commonalities emerged from the discussion. They will be re-viewed in outline form, which conveys the substance even as it underplays the emotionality.
