ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that the bundle of values and activities called Organization Development (OD) will continue to be applied, and moreso by increasing numbers of specialists and line managers, whatever happens to OD's present outward signs of its inward grace-cum-technology. OD will have an institutional future to the degree that it encompasses—effectively as well as firmly—policy and structural interventions. It have an institutional future to the degree that valid and reliable means are developed to improve quality control of what gets done, and how. OD will have an institutional future, relatedly, to the degree that its adherents have organizational and substantive roots for their orientation and technology and will have an institutional future to the degree that it gives telling attention to developing longer and more explicit "career chains" for internal consultants. OD will have an institutional future to the degree that it pays attention to its past.
