ABSTRACT

Denomination's congregations were quite solid in having little positive regard for integration as an ideal, and these congregations had precious little energy for seeking it in their religious practice. With foundation support, a Fund for Displaced Pastors was set up. Denominational pastors often were replaced by their congregations, for various reasons. An application could be made to a board sympathetic to evidence that a congregation's racial preferences led to a pastor's replacement. The pastor had to remain in the congregation's area, continuing to minister as best the pastor could to all within the congregation and its locality. The Statement should heighten consciousness about ethical problems, in short, and this may surface new problems, or exacerbate old problems, for Organization Development (OD) practitioners, and especially for internal consultants. The Fund would provide one approach to respecting the Statement while acknowledging some concrete sharing in the burdens that individuals may come to experience because they respect the Statement.
