ABSTRACT

Like her mother, but for different reasons, Mary Zakarian remained traumatized throughout her own life. The survivors who participated in the interviews have found the experience therapeutic. Throughout her life Mary exhibited many of the same symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder that her mother did. It is even conceivable to say that at points in her life Mary's symptoms eclipsed her mother's. In all her writings and lectures, Mary overlooked the aspect of her character that she inherited, or learned, from her father. While she was the only one of the Zakarian children to inherit his artistic gifts, she also exhibited his other traits more than her siblings did: his hypersensitivity, reactiveness to the emotions of others, quickness to anger, and also his hypochondria. Many trauma survivors go on to lead successful and relatively peaceful lives. In large numbers, Armenians attended the lecture and slide show Mary entitled "My Journey Through Life as the Child of Survivors of Genocide.".
