ABSTRACT

A shorter version of this essay first appeared in The Antioch Review (Winter 2009) as an introduction to a translated selection from Jourdan’s Fragments . Variants of other passages were also published in The Bitter Oleander (Vol. 15, No. 2, Autumn 2009, and Vol. 16, No. 1, Spring 2010), The Yale Review (October 2009), and Cerise Press (online, Vol. 1, Issue 2, Autumn 2009–Winter 2010) as extended biographical résumés accompanying translations from Jourdan’s work. The bibliography lists other translations of Jourdan’s work. The full essay is used as an introduction to Jourdan’s The Straw Sandals: Selected Prose and Poetry (New York: Chelsea Editions, 2011). See “Awe, Wonder, Bedazzlement” in volume 1. Most of the other poets mentioned in this essay are presented either in this volume or in one of the two preceding volumes.
