ABSTRACT

John D. Rockefeller brothers all served as the fund's initial trustees. Their founding motive was to carry on in the family philanthropic tradition and simultaneously engage in joint giving. Initially funded by annual grants from them, the fund remained a relatively small one until the 1950s, restricting its grants to New York City. W. Alton Jones had set up the foundation bearing his name in New York. The charter describing its statement of purpose opened with "to promote the general well-being and general good of mankind throughout the world". Joseph Newton Pew's philanthropic giving was characterized by its personal and anonymous character. The Edward Larocque Tinker Foundation was established in 1959 by him as a memorial to his wife, Frances McKee Tinker, and his paternal ancestors. His purpose in its founding was the utilization of its resources in the promotion of better understanding among the peoples of the United States and Latin America, Spain, and Portugal.
