ABSTRACT
During 1950, John D. MacArthur established the first and lesser-known of his two foundation philanthropic endeavors, the Chicago-based Retirement Research Foundation. The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation was incorporated in 1970 by MacArthur, accompanied in the same year by his establishment of a trust. George Soros oversees the funding and activities of some fifty philanthropic organizations in countries all over the world. Such activity, prior to 1996 and since, was not carried on without controversies, abroad and at home. John Marks Templeton along with his business endeavors had engaged in philanthropy years before he incorporated the John Templeton Foundation in 1988 in Tennessee. His philanthropic efforts ran side by side and were accompanied by deep and abiding religious convictions. It has become known that Kirk Kerkorian has made significant gifts to worthy causes in the Las Vegas area and much of it through the Lincy Foundation.
