ABSTRACT
As a child I survived the Holocaust, and as a young adult I witnessed the beginnings of the Biafran war that led to mass death in Nigeria. 1 Both of these events, in different ways, started me on the intellectual and emotional journey to study genocide with the hope of understanding and preventing it.
