ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a study to examine men and women's intentions and manipulated the presence of a passenger. It focuses on differences in measured variables between men and women in these different conditions and the moderating influence of gender and passenger on the relationship between measured variables and intentions. The chapter describes the value of using a scenario approach to understanding normative pressures on intentions to speed. It also examines the moderating effects of gender and passenger type on relationships in the theory of planned behavior (TPB) for this behavior. The TPB predicts that the impact of past behavior on intentions is mediated by the TPB variables and perceived behavioral control in particular. TPB components were measured by a number of multi-item scales in relation to driving in the manner described. The chapter also focuses on the risky driving behavior of exceeding the posted speed limit.
