ABSTRACT

The basic types of print and mail advertising used in campaigns include: brochures, handbills, palm cards, personal letters, "committee" letters, computer letters, mailgrams, newsletters, and newspapers. Secondary uses of print include shopping bags, buttons, bumper stickers, and lawn signs. Preparing and distributing brochures accounts for a considerable portion of campaign activity. New candidates are often surprised at how much printing and mailing brochures can cost. Targeting of telephone calls and direct mail were used in the money campaigns in the late 1960s. It is now common in almost all campaigns. There are three ways to produce a letter in quantity: impact or contact printing, ink jet printing, and laser printing (IBM 6670 and Xerox 9700 lasers). Laser printing is regarded as a major breakthrough because the quality of printing is considerably enhanced while production is also dramatically increased.
