ABSTRACT
The original Russian edition of Cancer Ward, entitled Rakovyi korpus, was published in Paris by the YMCA Press and in London in May 1968. The passage and the issue of 'ethical socialism' was to become a major motif of indignation among officials of the Writers' Union determined to suppress Cancer Ward. Solzhenitsyn's expulsion from the Soviet Union had been in the pipeline and lodged in the low brow of the Presidium for more than two years before it happened. He was to be expelled from the ussr, and his citizenship revoked, under a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet dated 12 February, on the basis of Article 7 of the ussr law of 19 August 1938. Solzhenitsyn called The GulagArchipelago a 'monument of solidarity with all the martyrs and the dead of 1918 to 1956'.
