ABSTRACT

The Coalition recognizes the importance of volunteers and the need for proper motivation and management. All the other major Central Florida facilities for the homeless have similar roots in religiously-motivated volunteerism, outreach, and ministry, and the same is true in most other cities and regions. As an organization founded by volunteers, the Coalition has always depended on the generosity of volunteers—the kindness of strangers—in executing its mission. The purpose of the survey was to obtain information from volunteers on their backgrounds and demographics, their reasons for and experiences with volunteering, and their potential willingness to volunteer in other, non-food-service capacities. The individual volunteers have a more structured retention program in place. Because individual volunteers work regularly to provide specific services, their work is evaluated just as if they were paid employees and their evaluations are kept in the volunteer's personnel file.
